A Black Jazz Records session led by tenor saxophonist Rudolph Johnson.
Moves between searching post-bop, soul-jazz warmth, and the funk groove of “Devon Jean.”
Remastered by Mike Milchner, with liner notes by Pat Thomas.
Spring Rain gives Rudolph Johnson’s commanding tenor saxophone a quartet setting that can swing hard or settle into a deep groove. Pianist John Barnes, bassist Reggie Johnson, and drummer Raymond Pounds support a leader whose phrasing moves between melodic clarity and more exploratory lines.
Originally issued by Black Jazz, the album connects straight-ahead jazz language with the rhythmic openness of the early 1970s. “Sylvia Ann,” “Diswa,” and “Devon Jean” reveal different sides of the group’s chemistry. This Real Gone Music reissue is pressed on blue vinyl with black swirl.
