Cry Baby brings nursery-rhyme imagery into a pop world full of uneasy relationships and complicated emotions. Toy-like sounds and tightly programmed rhythms give the arrangements their distinctive surface, while Melanie Martinez's phrasing keeps the stories intimate. The record's consistent visual language and melodic hooks make its darker ideas feel like parts of a connected narrative.
