Born to Die builds its atmosphere from sweeping strings, low-slung beats and Lana Del Rey's measured delivery. The songs turn images of romance, glamour and disappointment into clear melodic scenes, with the production giving them a shared cinematic scale. Beneath that large setting, small changes in phrasing keep the performances intimate and distinctive.
