The Queen Is Dead gives The Smiths' contrasting instincts room to sharpen one another. Johnny Marr's guitar arrangements can be brisk, intricate or beautifully spare, while Morrissey's vocals move between caustic humor and exposed feeling. The rhythm section keeps those shifts connected, giving the album both its immediate momentum and its quieter emotional depth.
