This collection highlights the Grateful Dead's songwriting alongside the improvisational reputation that often introduces them. Country, folk, blues and rock influences meet in clear melodic forms, with contrasting voices giving the songs different personalities. The sequence makes an inviting starting point, showing how much of the band's identity is already present inside the studio recordings.
