Charles Mingus “The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady” (Verve Acoustic Sounds Series) LP

The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady puts the focus on bass-led ensembles, blues and gospel roots, Ellington-inspired writing, and volatile group improvisation.

• Mingus uses a large ensemble to move between Ellingtonian orchestration, blues, flamenco-colored passages, and explosive group improvisation.
• The continuous suite was conceived with dance in mind and develops themes across the album rather than treating each track as a separate tune.
• It is frequently cited as one of Mingus's most ambitious and fully realized compositions.

For fans of Thelonious Monk, Eric Dolphy, and Duke Ellington.
