Black Sabbath's debut gives blues-based riffs a darker weight through Tony Iommi's guitar tone and the band's patient sense of tension. Bill Ward and Geezer Butler keep the music loose and responsive beneath the heaviness. Ozzy Osbourne's exposed vocal delivery completes a sound whose atmosphere comes as much from space and restraint as from volume.
