Kranky Records

Kranky is an American independent record label from Chicago that specializes in experimental and ambient music. Founded in 1993, its releases are often described as having a "hazy" or meditative quality and include genres like post-rock, drone, electronic, and psychedelic. Notable artists on the label include Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Stars of the Lid, Tim Hecker, and Grouper. 

What is clear is the label's independent ethic. Founders Joel Leoschke and Bruce Adams (along with the recent addition of Brian Foote of Kranky band Nudge) have done it almost all by themselves, with no financial backing, no exclusive distribution, and little outside help. You can hear the results of that uncompromising spirit in every release -  rarely does a Kranky record feel calculated or generic, despite the many changes in audience and technology that have come to pass...
