Faye Wong (王菲; born August 8, 1969) is a Chinese singer-songwriter and actress known for blending alternative music with Chinese pop. Born in Beijing, she moved to Hong Kong at 18 and debuted in 1989 as Shirley Wong. Her breakthrough came with the 1992 Cantopop hit “Fragile Woman,” after which she developed a distinctive style spanning Cantonese and Mandarin pop.

One of the most influential stars in the Chinese-speaking world, Wong also built large followings in Japan and Southeast Asia. Western audiences may know her from Wong Kar-wai’s films Chungking Express (1994) and 2046 (2004). Known for her distinctive voice and understated public persona, she has remained an enduring figure in Asian pop culture. In 2000, Guinness World Records recognized her as the best-selling Cantopop female artist, with an estimated 9.7 million albums sold.
