Dart’s piercing delivery and the band’s restless playing give this debut its abrasive character, with songs including “Hinckley Had a Vision” and “Cops for Fertilizer.”

The Crucifucks career has been anything but boring. Formed in Lansing, MI in 1982, around lyricist and mouthpiece, Doc Corbin Dart, whose anti-establishment politics and bent for provocative, deliberately offensive lyrical posturing made the Crucifucks something of an American analogue to England’s legendary Crass, The Crucifucks also possessed an absurdist streak that linked them to the acerbic humor of Jello Biafra and the surreal social satire of Pere Ubu.

It was this quality that helped catch Biafra’s attention after a show with the Dead Kennedys and The Meatmen in Pontiac, MI and would bring them into the fold of Alternative Tentacles Records for this self-titled debut record in 1985. Jello Biafra would recall the set many years later in an interview with Vice, “Here was this singer with a really high voice and Lyndon Johnson ears and a great big grin tormenting every single person in the room.... just finding ways to needle them over and over and over again to the point where they were swinging at him or taking shots at him and yelling ‘get off the stage,’ and then he’d just leap on top of them! And somehow they’d miss and he’d get back on stage and annoy them some more.” This frantic energy and the volatile political punk would be captured on their debut, featuring Dart on vocals, Gus Varner on guitar, Marc H. on bass, and future Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, with tracks like “Hinckley Had a Vision” and “Cops for Fertilizer.”

The album has developed a dedicated cult following in the years since, in no small part to, according to Tim Yohannan in the October 1984 issue of Maximum Rocknroll, “…Dart’s ‘Jerry Lewis’ vocals, spitting out all their satirical, biting songs… Hot, weird, and intense political punk!” In a 2007 interview, Doc Dart would disown the album, calling it “an abomination”!
