D-beats were still a component of the band's machinery, but the riffing began to resemble Grave and other stalwarts of 1990s Swedish death metal. On Deathless Master, the crust presence has all but departed, and Acephalix are now committed to death metal. In metal, consistency is more desirable than diversity-- bands are at their most potent when they record albums where the sound is uniform and where the atmosphere is established. There's always the occasional Naked City, but Acephalix know they are not Naked City. They know that finding your strength and focusing on that will reap artistic dividends, which is exactly what Deathless does.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eSpiritually, the quartet-- which shares three members with the newer group Vastum-- takes cues from the most ancient death metal band of them all, Master. When Paul Speckmann created Master in 1983, there was no \"death metal.\" He took the thrash and heavy metal he loved, amplified the harsh aspects, and birthed the new genre. Acephalix display a similar appreciation for simplicity on Deathless-- they don't seek to fancify death metal, but to penetrate the soil deeper. Riffs are still of the Swedish persuasion, but Acephalix also work in grooves that they can call their own. Guitarist Kyle House has a knack for catchiness in a genre that seldom rewards such a trait; this is especially seen in \"On Wings...\", where he maintains a bounce even when the chord patterns and tempos shift. \"The Hunger\" serves the same function as the long closing title track from Interminable, but improves upon that template. House's introductory lead is off-kilter and angular; from there the band continues to vamp and pummel until the track fades out.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAcephalix's most noticeable transformation is with vocalist Daniel Butler. In the group's earlier days, he had a snarl that was kept high enough to fit the then-crusty sound. Out of all the members, he's embraced the shift in direction the most, delivering a guttural yell seemingly submerged in tar. His vocals add the ambiance a death-metal album needs-- that the band is overtaking you, that you are a slave to the inevitable. You have to wonder if he's had it in him this whole time, and he was just waiting for the right music to really let hell break out. Lesser bands will list their vocalist under \"Vokills\" in their liner notes as a contrived measure of brutality; Butler will simply use his gut to strangle you.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWhat's also interesting about Deathless is that, while it's an entirely different organism from the rest of the band's works, like them, it was recorded at San Francisco's Lennon Studios with Vöetsek's Jef Leppard. He's in tune with the band's changes, and dials in appropriately thick tones. It's nice to see that a band can organically develop its sound while still maintaining a home-grown sensibility. Should the relationship continue, how else will Acephalix mutate in the future? That said, young Stefano had already begun his journey towards the darkness by practicing meditation and invocational rites in the attic of the same home, alongside his growing library of occult literature. In fact, the attic and basement would later be labeled “As Above” and “So Below,” respectively, and Death SS would utilize the two spaces for both the band’s mystical and musical rites.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIf there were a single experience that would serve to crystallize the direction that his life’s work would soon take, it was a 1977 visit to England as a fourteen-year-old, where he discovered punk rock and thus became acquainted with the underpinnings of the musical vehicle by which his vision would be realized. The band name itself was the result of a combination of influences – both as an homage to the poem, “In morte di Carlo Imbonati,” by Alessandro Manzoni, and a suggestion from the Mage of Orciano, a mystical mentor of sorts to Sylvester, who decreed in their final meeting that “Every magical work of yours will be done in death of Stefano Silvestri.” Thus, the band name is an abbreviation of this sage proclamation. At first, Catena was not convinced of the merits of the band name, in part due to the fact that it emphasized Silvestri’s role in it. However, he soon came to see his inclusion in the title, given that his stage name was to become “Death.” It was also decided that both Silvestri and Catena would be known thenceforth by the English translations of their Italian birth names – Steve Sylvester and Paul Chain.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOn the night of July 7, 1977 (’777′), Sylvester committed himself to the band for life with a dedicated ceremony of self-consecration that had been several days in the making. Throughout this creative process and the magical rituals that they practiced together in the same aforementioned attic, Sylvester and Chain formed an impenetrable bond. Due to their peculiarities, the duo became ostracized in the community, and this isolation, combined with a feeling of invincibility derived from their rituals, led them to commit a number of transgressions. These spiritual and erotic experiences became a foundational element of Death SS, to the point that they were almost inseparable from the music. Eventually, Claud Galley (rhythm guitars, bass) served as Zombie, Thomas Hand Chaste as Werewolf, and Danny Hughes as Mummy. Once suitable individuals had been found to fulfill these roles, Sylvester worked in earnest to execute his vision for their costumes.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAfter months of rehearsals, the band secured its first live gig on July 12, 1980 at Gabicce’s Aleph Club, a performance which had been set to begin at midnight and lasted a whole six minutes after a full day of preparations. As it turned out, the band emerged from its tent, played “Zombie,” and was overtaken by the moment to the point of destroying and\/or throwing everything in sight at the horrified audience. The result of the event was Death SS’ banishment from any local mainstream clubs. Without intention to disavow themselves of the antics that ended the first show so abruptly, the Palasport gig included hooded on-stage executioners, and it ended with a concoction of animal blood, waste, and bowels being thrown on the audience and a cat’s carcass being flung through the air to land on an unsuspecting patron. In the 1980s, while western cultural attitudes remained caught in the stranglehold of Christian morality, the Soviet Communist Party fostered an antagonistic posture toward religion, though the dogma of the Russian Orthodox Church still flowed in the bloodstream of the culture. In the mid-1980s, as Soviet society began to open up, the aggressive sounds of western rebellion resonated in the consciousness of Soviet youth. While the anti-religious aspect of extreme metal did not offend the ideological strictures imposed by the Communist Party in the same way it rankled religious conservatives in the West, the genre’s subversive, individualistic, and anti-authoritarian elements appealed to young disaffected minds in the East straining to escape the autocratic regime’s restrictive grip. Situated at the nexus of these cultural cross currents, Abadonna, who were then known as Falanga (or “Phalanx” in English), produced what might be considered a first wave black metal album that went almost completely unheard outside of the Soviet Union. Falanga formed in 1985 in the city of Mytishchi, located just outside Moscow. (In the 1990s, the small city would become a hunting ground for the prolific serial killer Alexander Pichushkin, often referred to as the “chess board killer.”) The trio consisting of bassist\/vocalist Nikolay \"Mike\" Gribenyuk, guitarist Alexander \"Abr\" Abramenkov, and drummer Andrey \"Beast\" Slobodyany began playing heavy metal in the style of Dio and Iron Maiden before gravitating toward a darker, heavier style. Though the band was often associated with the thrash scene at the time—they were often booked on fests alongside other thrash acts—theirs was a decidedly more sinister sound, one that finds its closest analogs in the early German thrash scene. The evil atmosphere on Мeртвый Гений is further enhanced by the primitive production, with Gribenyuk’s haunting reverb-drenched vocal incantations hovering ominously above the raw, rudimentary instrumentation of the guitars and drums played with feverish intensity. Yet it also possesses the peculiar unorthodoxy that characterizes and makes so compelling much of the metal created behind the Iron Curtain, where the bleakness of society, inaccessibility to equipment, and limited exposure to the current trends fostered a creative approach to the music that renders it compelling despite languishing in obscurity for nearly four decades.
